Die Niederländer unternahmen ihren ersten Siedlungsversuch im Jahr 1638, als der berühmte niederländische Seefahrer Tasman die Insel als Basis für die Entdeckung des westlichen Teils Australiens nutzte. Heute sehen Sie im Frederik-Hendrik-Museum Artefakte und Ruinen aus der niederländischen Zeit und können das Denkmal der niederländischen Erstlandung in Ferney besichtigen. Dieses nationale Kulturerbe liegt am Fuße des Lion Mountain und überblickt eine große Bucht, in der 1810 eine historische Schlacht zwischen den Briten und den Franzosen stattfand.
