Mahebourg Museum

Discover national history in an 18th-century mansion at Mahebourg Museum

Located in the coastal town of Mahebourg in the southeast of the island, this charming little museum showcases a wealth of Mauritian history. Among its collection, you can find a nearly complete skeleton of a dodo, old maps, weapons and artefacts salvaged from shipwrecks and naval battles. Discover the island’s rich, colonial past with its collection of old coins and furniture, too.

The museum is housed in Gheude Castle, a grand colonial mansion which was built at the end of the 18th century. Now a national heritage building, it has a 12-acre garden which is home to a colourful reconstruction of a colonial village.
