Dating back to around 1836 and located in the village of Moka, Eureka House is a property with history. The mansion, which can be found between Mount Ory and a cascading river, was built using local ebony and mahogany wood. Now a museum, Eureka House is filled with period furniture and a myriad of curious antiques that give visitors an authentic glimpse into the island’s past. It also has a whopping 109 doors and windows!
Take a guided tour of the house, also known as Maison Eureka, and learn about the island’s plantation history, before stopping for a spot of lunch at the museum’s restaurant. Spend the afternoon wandering around the acres of nature reserve that surround Eureka House, including numerous waterfalls, greenhouses, gardens and impeccably-maintained lawns ‒ one of the many very British touches that pay tribute to Mr Carr, the aristocrat who ordered the construction of the mansion.
