Natural History Museum

Step back in time at the Natural History Museum

Located in Mauritius’ buzzing capital city, Port Louis, the Natural History Museum is the oldest museum on the island. Constructed between 1880 and 1884 and found on the ground floor of the Mauritius Institute, it now houses a fascinating array of exhibitions that give visitors the chance to learn more about the rich fauna and flora of the island.

As well as butterfly, insect and seashell collections, replicas of marine life and geology exhibitions, the museum is most famously home to a dodo skeleton, discovered in 1904 by barber Louis Etienne Thirioux.
